Pilkington studied at the University of Westminster Film School, then found success directing short films. His first short 'Pocket' won the BBC Best Short film award 1998 and was sold all around the world. In 1999 Pilkington was commissioned by the BBC to do a 10/10 short resulting in the acclaimed kids film 'Disco'; during this period James ventured into commercial directing filming tvc's for AXA, PlayStation (TBWA) and a test for Volkswagen. In 2000 James' short comedy 'Sweet' won the Empire Magazine best short film award, was a runner up in the London Film Festival and was nominated for a BAFTA. His hobbies include cheese-rolling, Morris dancing,watching his favorite show 'Sweet Valley High' with a few of his closest buddies.
